Nicole Kidman has receieved one of her country’s highest honors in a special ceremony held today at Govt House in Sydney Australia where she was awarded the Companion of the Order of Australia by the Governor-General Michael Jeffery, a representative for the Queen.

This honor “is awarded for eminent achievement and merit of the highest degree in service to Australia or humanity at large.” Therefore it was bestowed on Nicole Kidman because of her excellent contributions to film and her “work promoting women and children’s health, and cancer research.” Nicole Kidman is also a goodwill ambassador for UNICEF.

When speaking to reporters just after accepting the award Kidman said,

“It’s a pat on the back, which as a little girl is something you dream of.”

As the creme de la creme of Hollywood sizzled at the red carpet wearing outfits designed by their favorite designers… it looked like a fashion fiesta at the Oscars.

Fashion critic, Tom Julian, of Oscar.com, said,

“This is the year of extravagant designs - fancy fabrics, feathers as trim, unexpected stones and metallics.”

Nicole Kidman was appreciated and was one of the early front runners in the best dress category along with Reese Witherspoon in a strapless deep purple gown and Gwyneth Paltrow in Zac Polsen.

Nicole Kidman on Friday praised a U.N. fund set up 10 years ago for initiatives to end violence against women worldwide, saying it had made a difference in the lives of countless people.

Kidman, the goodwill ambassador of the U.N. Development Fund for Women, or UNIFEM, told a gathering of U.N. diplomats via teleconference from Los Angeles that she heard many stories of survival during a tour of Kosovo in October.

She said one woman had been repeatedly raped by soldiers and become pregnant, making her an outcast in her community.

With the help of women’s rights activists, though, she testified about the abuse she suffered before the International Criminal Court in the Netherlands, Kidman said.

“Her rape was used as a weapon of war, how it shatters women’s lives and communities,” she said.

Kidman, who is in Los Angeles shooting the science fiction thriller “The Invasion,” spoke as part of an event to mark the 10-year anniversary of the establishment of the U.N. Trust Fund to End Violence Against Women.

“What is so impressive is how (the women) are speaking out, helping one another and organizing to achieve political and social change,” Kidman said. “For the past 10 years, UNIFEM and the U.N. trust fund … have been a key ally in this movement for change and gender equality.”

Since its inception, the fund has granted more than $13 million to 226 initiatives around the globe, including in Kosovo where UNIFEM has run several projects assessing the impact of the 1990s war on women.

Some of the grant money was also used last year to ensure the implementation of policies and laws to address violence against women in many countries, said Noeleen Heyzer, UNIFEM executive director.

In Liberia, the program is funding organizations that are monitoring how a stiff new law against rape is being enacted, the country’s president, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, said in a video message to the group.

“These grants are contributing to the movement in my country toward an accountable government,” said Sirleaf, who became Africa’s first elected female head of state when she took office last year.

Nicole Kidman is the face of cancer Research UK’s All Join Hands Together and is all out in promoting Cancer awareness month .

October is considered as cancer awareness month. Nicole herself has been indirectly affected by cancer as her mother had suffered from Breast cancer when Nicole was 17 but recovered later on .Speaking at the launch of UK’S Breast cancer awareness program

Nicole said.. “As someone whose family has personally been affected by the disease, I can’t stress enough how important it is that women get to know and understand what is normal for their body. I hope that this UK campaign will raise awareness of breast cancer amongst women of all ages and encourage them to report any unusual changes and go for screening if they are over 50. Together we will beat cancer .

Nicole who is actively involved in creating awareness amongst women is doing allot of work in this respect .An important reason being that her mother’s illness has created a major impact on her as she has seen alot and even had to drop out of school to take care of her ill mother. Guess old wounds die hard…anyway hope your effort brings in the required results …so that no one has to go through the pain you and your mother did……….. Go for it gal !

according to sources Nicole and Keith will be strolling the red carpet together in october. Keith will also unveil his latest album ‘Love, Pain & The Whole Crazy Thing’, before its Australian release on November 4.

Kidman will now work with the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) on “critical gender concerns such as ending violence against women,” according to a U.N. statement

“I hope that I can act as a conduit, that I can be the person who tells some of these stories,” Kidman told in an interview. “The way in which I was raised and the things I’ve seen in my life has led me toward this.”
